McComas Hall, located in the traffic circle at the intersection of Washington Street and West Campus Drive, houses one of the gyms on campus as well as the main administrative and business offices for Recreational Sports.
McComas Hall opened to students in 1998 with 61,000 square feet of recreation space. As a result of the ever-increasing popularity of recreation, the facility was expanded by 26,000 square feet in 2010.
The recreation area features:
- 2 weight training areas
- Cardio deck
- 3 basketball/volleyball courts
- 2 fitness studios
- 25-yard pool
- Jogging track (9 laps = 1 mile)
- Equipment check out
- Locker and shower facilities
- Shuffleboard/Billiards/Table Tennis
Pool
The pool in McComas hall is a 25-yard, eight-lane swimming pool with a a maximum depth of 6.5 feet. Thirty-six laps (down and back) is equal to one mile.
There are usually always lanes open for swimming, even when swim lessons are occuring. The pool closes periodically for special events.
Access
Any student who has paid the recreation fee has access to the gym in McComas Hall. All you have to do is present your Hokie Passport at the service desk. Faculty and staff can purchase a membership to McComas Hall.
James Douglas McComas
The student health and fitness facility is named for James Douglas McComas, university president from 1988 to 1994. The late president emphasized undergraduate education, kept an open door for students, recruited National Merit Scholars, and personally advised several undergraduates. He established the Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Academic Advising Center, encouraged diversity, and promoted public service.
McComas Hall also houses the Schiffert Health Center, Cook Counseling Center, and Hokie Wellness
