Membership and Guest Access

Recreational Sports offers a variety of membership options to various campus community groups to help meet fitness needs!

All Virginia Tech full and part time enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who pay the recreation fee in the comprehensive fees of their tuition have access to use McComas Hall, War Memorial Hall, and the Rec Sports Field House during normal operational hours. If a student is not enrolled in classes during any given semester and has not yet graduated, individuals can pay the recreation fee per semester to purchase a membership. Memberships can be purchased online any time or at either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall. Incoming students, who have not yet started classes, do not qualify to purchase membership access.

Membership rates for the students who are not enrolled are as follows:

  • Single Semester Rate (Fall 2024 or Spring 2025): $200
  • Single Summer Session 2025 (Session I or Session II): $75
  • Summer Semester 2025 (sessions I&II): $150

Free 30-Day McComas Trial

All employees have access to try out the following facilities, McComas Hall, War Memorial Hall, Rec Sports Field House and the Venture Out Center, for one (1) free, 30-day period during their time on staff at Virginia Tech. Free trial memberships can be started anytime and during any point of their employment. Rec Sports free trials include a 30-day all-access membership to the facility, free group exercise classes, and free towel service. If you are interested in starting your free trial or would like more information, please email recsports@vt.edu.

Payroll Deduction Options

Payroll deduction is available on all Early Bird and All Access memberships for the semester. Payroll deduction memberships can be purchased online or in person at the Welcome Desks located in McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall.

Payroll deduction is only available to full-time employees and you must enroll by the deadline each semester in order to qualify. At the time of sale, all payroll deduction memberships will show a cost of $0. Please note that the full amount of the membership will be taken out in increments each pay period over the course of the membership.

If you have any questions about payroll deduction and enrollment deadlines, please email recsports@vt.edu. Following the enrollment deadline each semester, we are not able to initiate a payroll deduction membership or request a reversal or refund of your payroll deduction enrollment.

Early Bird Membership

This membership option allows access to the McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall gyms, the Rec Sports Field House, and the Venture Out Center from opening until 2 p.m., Monday-Friday, in addition to full access on the weekends. Early Bird memberships are prorated in our system. As the semester progresses, membership fees decrease.

Rates for the early bird membership are as follows:

Single Semester Rate (Fall or Spring): $74

Summer Semester 2025 (sessions I&II): $55.50

Annual (Fall, Spring, Summer I&II) Rate: $148

Early Bird memberships can be purchased online any time or at either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall. Additional costs are required to participate in fitness classes, intramural sports, Venture Out trips, and similar activities. Spouse/partner guests of current Virginia Tech employees, retirees, and students are eligible to purchase a membership with VT Rec Sports. In order to qualify, all spouse/partner candidates must be 18 years or older and be able to provide proper documentation that they reside at the same address as their sponsor. Please note that a verified spouse/partner candidate is able to purchase a membership regardless of their sponsor’s membership status. On an annual basis, spouse/partner memberships will need to be renewed. Only one spouse/partner member will be granted per valid Virginia Tech sponsor. In order to apply for verification, all spouse/partner candidates and sponsors must follow these steps:

  1. The Virginia Tech sponsor and spouse/partner candidate must visit either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall to start the application process. 
  2. The sponsor and candidate will complete the appropriate registration forms and verification process with a Recreational Sports staff member, which indicates that the sponsor assumes full financial and legal responsibility for their spouse/partner once their membership access is granted. 
  3. An official document with both names and the same address must be presented OR two documents (one for each individual) may be used as long as both reference the same address. Acceptable documents include a residential lease, utility bills, bank statement, or driver's license (or other official forms of identification) bearing the applicant’s full name and address.
  4. At the end of the application process, an identification badge and online account credentials will be issued to the spouse/partner. Issued ID badges must be picked up at either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall.
  5. If a replacement ID badge is required, the cost of a new badge will be $10.

Virginia Tech Alumni are eligible for access with VT Rec Sports. On an annual basis, alumni memberships will need to be renewed. If you have any questions, please email recsports@vt.edu for assistance.

In order to apply for verification, all Virginia Tech Alumni must follow these steps:

  1. Alums must visit either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall to start the application process. 
  2. The alum will complete the appropriate membership form and verification process with a Recreational Sports staff member. During this time, a membership card and online account credentials will be issued at this time, if needed. A membership can be purchased at this time.
  3. If a replacement membership card is required, the cost of a new card will be $10.

Alumni are eligible to purchase the following memberships:


Early Bird Membership

Summer All Access Membership
This membership option allows access to the McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall gyms, the Rec Sports Field House, and the Venture Out Center during normal summer operating hours, which can be found here. All Access memberships are set up to prorate in our system. As the semester progresses, membership fees decrease.

Rates for the Summer All-Access membership are as follows:

  • Summer Semester 2025 (sessions I&II): $172.50

Summer All Access memberships can be purchased online any time or in person at either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall. 18+ Dependents

Dependents of current Virginia Tech employees, retirees, and students are eligible for access with VT Rec Sports. On an annual basis, spouse/partner memberships will need to be renewed. If you have any questions, please email recsports@vt.edu for assistance!

In order to apply for verification, all dependants 18+ years of age must follow these steps:

  1. The sponsor and the 18+ dependent candidate must visit either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall to start the application process. 
  2. The sponsor and candidate will complete the appropriate registration forms and verification process with a Recreational Sports staff member, which indicates that the sponsor assumes full financial and legal responsibility for their 18+ dependent once their membership access is granted. Each dependent candidate will be asked to bring a photo ID during the application process. During this time, an identification badge and online account credentials will be issued to the dependent and a membership can be purchased.
  3. If a replacement ID badge is required, the cost of a new badge will be $10.

Minor Dependents

In order to apply for verification, all minor dependents under 18 years of age must follow these steps:

  1. On behalf of the minor dependent candidate(s), the Virginia Tech sponsor must visit either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall to start the application process. 
  2. The sponsor for the minor dependent candidate(s) will complete the appropriate registration forms and verification process with a Recreational Sports staff member, which indicates that the sponsor assumes full financial and legal responsibility for their dependent(s) once their membership access is granted. During this time, an identification badge will be issued for the verified dependent(s) and a Minor Dependent access membership will be added to the dependent's profile.
  3. A one-time $10 fee will be charged for the creation of an ID badge for each dependent.

 

Minor Dependent Member Policies for Access:

  • Verified Minor Dependents will be able to access the facilities during normal operating hours Monday-Sunday.
  • The sponsor to a Minor Dependent must have a valid membership to VT Rec Sports. All verified Minor Dependents must be accompanied by their sponsor at all times while accessing our facilities.
  • Minor Dependents may attend open recreation swim times only when accompanied by their sponsor. Children that are not able to swim must be within arms length of their sponsor.

Daily guests of current VT Rec Sports members are eligible to purchase a 24-hour guest pass. In order to qualify, all guests must be 18 years or older and be sponsored by a current VT Rec Sports member. Please note that sponsors assume full financial and legal responsibility for their guest once a guest pass is administered. In order to move forward with a daily guest pass, all guests and sponsors must follow these steps:

  1. The guest and their sponsor should visit either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall to sign a waiver and start the process of purchasing a guest pass.
  2. Daily guest passes are $10 per person for a 24-hour period. Guest passes can be purchased at any point during normal operating hours. Guest passes can only be purchased by credit/debit card or Hokie Passport.
  3. Upon receiving access, the daily guest is required to present their issued receipt/pass for verification during each visit within their designated 24-hour access period.

Daily Guest Policies for Access:

  • Once purchased, daily passes are good for use in McComas Hall gym and the Rec Sports Field House but must be purchased in person at McComas Hall gym before access is granted.

  • The daily guest must have a picture ID with them during each visit to the facility throughout their 24-hour period of access.

  • The sponsor can have more than one guest, but each guest will need to pay the fee and sign a waiver.

  • The sponsor must be in the facility with daily guest during each visit throughout their 24-hour period of access after pass is purchased.

Conference and Guest Services attendees, who are contracted through the VT Conference and Guest Services office, are eligible to purchase a membership with VT Rec Sports. If you have any questions about this information, please email recsports@vt.edu for assistance!

Valid membership to VT Rec Sports allows access to the McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall gyms, the Rec Sports Field House, and the Venture Out Center as well as unlimited use of various outdoor recreational facilities that VT Rec Sports oversees. 

*All Conference and Guest Services attendees must be 18 years or older to purchase access to our facilities.

 

In order for VT Conference and Guest Services attendees to move forward with a membership, please follow these steps:

  1. Check with your program director to see if gym membership needs to be paid on an individual basis or is budgeted through your program. If it is budgeted through your program for the entire group, please have the program director reach out to recsports@vt.edu.
  2. If membership will be purchased on an individual basis, each VT Conference and Guest Services attendee should visit either Welcome Desk located in McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall with their issued ID/access card to purchase an access membership.

 

VT Conference and Guest Services attendees members are eligible to purchase the following memberships:

  • Day Rate: $10/per person

  • Weekend Rate (Friday, Saturday, + Sunday): $15/per person

  • Weekly Rate (Monday-Sunday): $20/per person

  • 3-4 Weeks/Full Semester Rate: $55/per person
  • 5+ Weeks: Pro-Rate All Access Membership

Refund Policy

All sales are final. Partial refunds will only be issued (subject to an administrative fee) if medical documentation is provided by a physician stating the participant can no longer continue in physical activity.
