Membership

Recreational Sports offers a variety of membership options to various campus community groups to help meet fitness needs!

All Virginia Tech full and part time enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who pay the recreation fee have access to McComas Hall. If a student is not enrolled in classes they can pay the recreation fee to gain access to McComas gym or purchase a daily guest pass for each visit. This fee must be purchased in the Recreational Sports business office at 142 McComas Hall between 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Summer Student Memberships

If a student who is not enrolled in classes during the summer sessions and has not graduated wishes to to work out in McComas Hall, they may pay the summer recreation fee (either in full - $123.00 - or by summer session - $61.50). This fee must be purchased in the Recreational Sports business office at 142 McComas Hall between 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Free 14-Day McComas Trial

All employees have access to try out McComas gym for one (1) free, 14-day period during their time on staff at Virginia Tech. Free trial memberships can be started anytime and during any point of their employment. McComas gym free trials include access to the facility during normal operational hours on weekdays and weekends, free group exercise classes, and free towel service. If you are interested in starting your free trial or would like more information, please email recsports@vt.edu.

If you are new to the space and would like to become more oriented with our services, we offer a self-guided tour handouts, please visit the McComas Hall Welcome Desk to pick yours up. We also offer guided walking tours of the full McComas facility. To schedule a tour with us, please email recsports@vt.edu.

Early Bird McComas Membership

This membership option allows access to McComas gym from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday-Friday, in addition to full, unrestricted access on the weekends.

Rates for the early bird membership are as follows:

  • Spring 2020: $46
  • Spring 2020 & Summer Sessions I&II 2020: $77

Starting October 16, 2019, Early Bird McComas memberships can be purchased online anytime or in person in the Recreational Sports business office located at 142 McComas Hall. Our office is open from 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday. All fitness classes, intramural sports, Venture Out trips, etc. have extra associated costs in order to participate. All Access McComas Membership

This membership option allows unrestricted access to the facility during normal operational hours on weekdays and weekends.

Rates for the All Access membership are as follows:

  • Spring 2020: $163.50
  • Spring 2020 & Summer Sessions I&II 2020: $286

All Access memberships are set up to prorate in our system. As the semester goes on, the cheaper the memberships become.

Payroll Deduction Options

Payroll deduction is available on all Early Bird and All Access memberships starting in the Spring 2020 semester. Payroll deduction memberships can be purchased online or in person in the Recreational Sports business office located at 142 McComas Hall. Our office is open from 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday. Payroll deduction is only available to full-time employees and you must enroll by the 5th of the month prior to the start of the semester to be eligible. After the 5th of the month prior to the semester, you cannot enroll in payroll deduction or reverse/refund your payroll deduction.

Long-term guests of current Virginia Tech employees, retirees and students are eligible to purchase a membership for McComas Hall gym. In order to qualify, all long-term guests must be 18 years or older and be able to provide proper documentation that they reside at the same address of their sponsor. 

An official document with both names and the same address must be presented OR two documents (one for each individual) may be used as long as they both reference the same address. Acceptable documents include a residential lease, utility bills, bank statement, or driver's license (or other office identification card) bearing the applicant’s full name and address. Only one long-term guest will be granted per valid Virginia Tech sponsor.

In order to apply, all long-term guests and sponsors must follow these steps:

  • The Virginia Tech sponsor and long-term guest candidate must visit the Recreational Sports business office together, anytime Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm, with a valid photo IDs and documents that prove corresponding residency to verify eligibility for membership.
  • The sponsor and candidate will complete the appropriate registration forms with a Recreational Sports staff member, which indicates that the sponsor assumes full financial and legal responsibility for their long-term guest once their membership is granted.
  • After completing the required registration forms, the candidate will take their verification form to the Hokie Passport office, present personal identification that includes birth date (e.g., driver's license, birth certificate, etc.), pay a $15 processing fee, and obtain a specific long-term guest Hokie Passport card for access to the gym.
  • Once their new Hokie Passport number is imported into our system (it usually takes 1-2 days after receiving the initial Hokie Passport), all long-term guests will need to visit the Rec Sports business office to purchase their McComas membership. This office is located at 142 McComas Hall and is open from 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Recreational Sports will reopen War Memorial Gym temporarily during the spring 2020 semester. It will reopen starting on Jan. 21 and stay open until spring break. Alumni will have access to War Memorial Gym during this time.

All alumni must have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from Virginia Tech; those who did not complete a degree are not considered alumni.

In order to receive an Alumni Hokie Passport, all Virginia Tech alumni must follow these steps:

  1. Alumnus must visit the Recreational Sports business office during normal operational hours with their expired student Hokie Passport and/or number and a photo ID to verify their eligibility.
  2. Alumnus will complete the appropriate registration form with the Recreational Sports staff member and will have the staff member verify their alumni status with the Registrar’s Office.
  3. After completing the required registration forms, the candidate will take their verification form to the Hokie Passport office, present personal identification that includes birth date (e.g., driver's license, birth certificate, etc.), pay a $15 processing fee, and obtain a specific alumni Hokie Passport card for access to the gym.
  4. Once an Alumni Hokie Passport has been received, Alumni may purchase $5 Daily Guest Passes. Daily guest passes are valid for  24-hours from the time of purchase. All guests will be asked to present their guest pass and alumni card upon each entrance into a facility.

Dependents of individuals with a current, valid McComas Hall membership are eligible for free access to McComas Hall on Saturday and Sunday. All qualifying candidates must be claimed as a dependent on their parent or guardian's tax form to be eligible to pursue a dependent pass.

In order to apply, all dependants must follow these steps:

For dependents 18+ years old:

The Virginia Tech sponsor and dependent candidate(s) must visit the Recreational Sports business office together during normal operational hours to fill out appropriate registration forms. 

  • All dependents 18+ years old need to be present to complete and sign their own usage waiver.

  • After completing the required registration forms, the candidate(s) will take their verification form to the Hokie Passport office, present personal identification that includes birth date (e.g., driver's license, birth certificate, etc.), pay a $15 processing fee, and obtain a specific dependent Hokie Passport card for access to the gym.

  • Once the new Hokie Passport is obtained, all dependents 16+ can use all areas of the facility unaccompanied at all times the building is in operation.

For dependents 16-17 years old:

  • The Virginia Tech sponsor and dependent candidate(s) must visit the Recreational Sports business office together during normal operational hours to fill out appropriate registration forms.

  • The Virginia Tech sponsor will sign a usage waiver for all dependents in this age range.

  • After completing the required registration forms, the candidate(s) will take their verification form to the Hokie Passport office, present personal identification that includes birth date (e.g., driver's license, birth certificate, etc.), pay a $15 processing fee, and obtain a specific dependent Hokie Passport card for access to the gym.

  • Once the new Hokie Passport is obtained, all dependents 16+ can use all areas of the facility unaccompanied at all times the building is in operation.

For dependents 15 years old and under:

  • The Virginia Tech sponsor must visit the Recreational Sports business office together during normal operational hours to fill out appropriate registration forms. Dependents 15 years old and younger do not need to be present to complete paperwork and/or get their IDs made.

  • The Virginia Tech sponsor will sign a usage waiver for all dependents on the appropriate form.

  • Upon completion of all appropriate registration forms, Recreational Sports will issue the dependent(s) an in-house recreation passport card for access.

  • Dependents 15 years and younger do not have access to the weight room facilities and must be accompanied by their sponsor/guardian at all times.
  • Children may attend open recreation swim times only when accompanied by parent or legal guardian. Children that cannot swim must be within arm’s length of parent or guardian.

 

Recreational Sports will reopen War Memorial Gym temporarily during the spring 2020 semester. It will reopen starting on Jan. 21 and stay open until spring break. CRC Employees will have access to War Memorial Gym during this time.

All CRC employees are eligible to obtain a Hokie Passport via the Hokie Passport Office. 

Once a CRC Hokie Passport has been received, employees may purchase Daily Guest Passes. Daily guest passes are valid for  24-hours from the time of purchase. 

All guests will be asked to present their guest pass upon each entrance into a facility.

Daily Guest Pass 

Once an CRC Employee Hokie Passport has been received, they may purchase $5 Daily Guest Passes. Daily guest passes are valid for  24-hours from the time of purchase. All guests will be asked to present their guest pass and CRC employee card upon each entrance into a facility.

 

Current Virginia Tech students and employees who have access or a valid membership can sponsor one (1) guest pass per 24-hour period at McComas Hall gym. Guest passes are $5 and can be paid for at the McComas welcome desk via credit card or Hokie Passport payment. Once a guest pass is purchased, guests can use their guest pass anytime over the next 24-hour period. Sponsors must be in the building with their guests during each visit.
