Hokie Feature: Women's Club Lacrosse
Women’s Lacrosse has consistently been one of the best club teams that Virginia Tech has to offer. Appearing in the Nationals tournament nearly every year, this group has shown to play at a high level whether in local competitions or against opponents across the country. Unfortunately, club lacrosse hasn’t been able to travel this past season due to COVID-19, but has made the most of the situation, practicing to get better every day.
“There’s no explaining the basics, you kind of just get to play lacrosse which is nice and not really worry about teaching people how to do it,” senior Rachel Robinson said. “All of us have played before and it’s competitive, so all of us really know what we’re doing.”
For many on the team, the combination of friendships on the team and a strong will to win is what makes the close-knit group enjoy playing so much.
“We have a very young team with 13 sophomores, but that makes it very fun,” president Maria Keener said. “We’re all pretty close I would say and just all have the same drive to compete but also have fun at the same time.”
The team was playing at its best when Nationals was cancelled last season and has only improved since. When the Hokies are able to face opponents from other schools again, they believe that even after this time off they’ll be ready. Luckily for the club, that opportunity may be coming sooner than they initially thought.
“We are trying to schedule at least one game this season, two teams want to play us and we are looking at mid-April,” said fundraising chair Hailey Morse. “I’m super excited and I know that they’re super excited. Hopefully that can happen because that gives us something more to practice for.”
After so much hard work and determination to play despite the difficult circumstances, lacrosse will welcome any form of competition they can get. Led by a group of seasoned veterans, they will keep practicing and improving every day to reach their goals and succeed. But regardless of how this abbreviated season goes, the group can hold its head high knowing that they worked their hardest to get better at the sport that they love while making lifelong friendships along the way.
In their debut game of the season, and first game in over a year, the club team hosted the University of Tennessee for a single game on April 10. The Hokies won with a final score of 24-1.
