Hokie Feature: Men's Club Volleyball
The Men’s Club Volleyball team has begun practice again this semester, as they look to continue to improve as one of the best collegiate club volleyball teams in the country. Despite not being able to travel and play other schools the past two semesters due to COVID-19, the team has stayed committed to achieving its goals as it uses this time off to improve.
“I think the goal for our guys right now is just to be able to get in the gym,” said club president Josh Berman. “We know with everything going on that it’s tough to go out to other schools and other states to compete. So I think for us just being able to get in the gym and play, that’s what we’re happy with right now.”
With practices consisting largely of scrimmages against one another, the team has made the most of the weekly drills to hone the finer parts of its game.
“Honestly I feel really good, we have a lot of really good players this year,” said Matthew Lewandowski. “I feel like just playing against each other has really improved our defense, overall it’s been a really good time and I think that we’ll do really well.”
The team has continued to look on the bright side even during these uncertain times. One of its highlights this year has been the opportunity to utilize the brand new fieldhouse for its practices.
“Playing in the fieldhouse has been perfect, it’s not too hot or cold right now, it’s just been a great opportunity to come out and still play even with everything that is going on,” said Lewandoski.
Despite being unable to travel and face other collegiate teams, the Hokies are optimistic that if and when the time comes when they can compete again, they’ll be ready.
“Overall, we have an incredible group of guys,” said Berman. We were ranked 12th in the nation before everything was shut down and the majority of those guys are all back. They have told us that there is still a chance we get approved to travel, so if we are able to come out and compete, I think our guys are ready. We have some incredible talents and I think we can prove that Virginia Tech is a highly talented club volleyball team.”
