Hokie Feature: Club Golf
Golf Sport Club President Tommy Fleming has missed the competition scene like most. However, the club has wasted no time getting back into the swing of tournaments. Placing in the top two in the past two tournaments they’ve competed in, Fleming has only great things to say about getting back on the green.
“I feel very fulfilled seeing that all my hard work over the past year is finally paying off and we are able to compete again. It has had a big impact on my time here at Tech so I am very proud to be the leader of the team and help us to succeed in any way I can. I am just happy for the seniors that we get one last chance to compete and play for the team that has meant so much to us over the years.”
Speaking to the team dynamic, Fleming says they have found a healthy balance of balance and camaraderie.
“While we do have to compete with one another to qualify for the travelling tournament team, at the end of the day we all want to see each other play their best and for the team to be successful in tournaments.”
Additionally, senior Eli Newman, has found that the “team dynamic comes mostly when practicing by helping other guys improve their game, and vice versa.”
Fleming loves the independent aspect of the sport and that it is “all on you.”
“There is nobody there to help you or coach you or pick you up if you are having a bad day. I like the challenge of pushing myself and having to motivate myself everyday to practice and get better. With golf there is always something that can be improved and worked on, and I like the struggle of trying to figure it all out for myself.”
