Hokie Feature: Club Baseball Team Wins National Championship
Pittsburg, Kansas – The Virginia Tech Club Baseball Team won the National Club Baseball Association National Championship on Wednesday night by a score of 6-0. Braden Huebsch pitched a perfect game on the mound while the Hokies produced six runs on nine hits.
The Hokies got on the board early and never looked back. In the bottom of the first, with runners on the corners, Donovan Murphy put a single in play that sent Joseph Rutherford home for a 1-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Devin Kakar sent another run home to put the Hokies up 2-0.
With two outs in the second, John Quinn’s single allowed Dylan Malmlov and Kyle Eagle to score to stretch the lead to four. In the third frame, Eagle’s double scored Kakar from second to put the Hokies ahead 5-0. In the fifth inning, a John King triple put him in scoring position for Eagle’s RBI single and the Hokies final run.
Virginia Tech started the tournament with a 4-1 loss to Salisbury University. But the Hokies fought back through the loser’s bracket beating Iowa, Salisbury, and East Carolina.
Huebsch and Skylar Petry were named Co-MVPs of the tournament. Huebsch was 2-0 with 12 innings pitched and a 0.58 ERA. Petry earned two complete game shut outs including a no hitter. He was 2-0 in 14 innings pitched.
