Small Group Coach

Position Description:

Small Group Training coaches (referred to as coaches going forward) are responsible for leading small groups of 3-12 participants in a specialized format for Virginia Tech. Coaches will effectively work with their groups in a progressive format that works on performance improvement, corrective form, and specialized education. Coaches are also responsible for promoting and marketing their classes and all classes must have a minimum of 3 people signed up in order to complete the 4-week session. In addition, all fitness staff must attend mandatory trainings, participate in evaluations, and maintain professionalism in all aspects of the position. Coaches will have the ability to adopt proactive strategies to help advance the department's safety and risk management initiatives in order to create a positive and safe environment. In addition, Rec Sports consistently strives to create inclusive and welcoming environments, and to promote the importance of well-being and physical activity to all patrons.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coach supportive exercise classes to a diverse population
  • Be familiar with basic fitness principles and application to exercise
  • Adapt your teaching approaches to the age, experience and ability of participants so they can meet course objectives
  • Ensure the health and safety of the participants by making sure all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and materials and equipment are safe
  • Communicate regularly with participants, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress
  • Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies in accordance with facility procedures
  • Report facility and safety equipment issues 
  • Educate the patrons on the rewards of a life-long commitment of exercise that can be fun
  • Be professional, courteous, prompt, prepared, self-confident, enthusiastic, and motivational for each of the classes and activities you conduct
  • Participate in trainings and other meetings that are required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be affiliated with Virginia Tech
  • Currently certified as a group exercise instructor or personal trainer through an NCCA accredited fitness company (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NSCA, etc.) OR specialty certification (CrossFit, TRX, etc.)
  • Current Certification in CPR/AED, First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens (American Red Cross are preferred)
  • Knowledge and application of proper technique and form for exercises
  • Ability to motivate participants
  • Creative in designing a variety of programming
  • An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures
  • Good customer service skills, communication and decision-making skills
