Recreation Courses for Academic Credit

In some cases, students can complete an academic course to increase qualifications for student employment positions.


HNFE 2254: Exercise Leadership: Group Fitness Instruction

  • Schedule: Tuesday/Thursday from 9:30-10:45 a.m.
  • Credits: 3 hours
  • Description: This is a prep-course to become certified to be a Group Fitness Instructor.
    Review of the physiological and behavioral concepts and practical skills required to be an effective group fitness instructor for the general population. Training and certification for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Fibrillation Certification- CPR and AED is provided. Prepares students to successfully complete the American Council on Exercise Group Fitness Instructor National Certification Exam. This course is pass/fail only. HNFE 2254 is ONLY offered in the fall semester.

HNFE 2274: Wilderness First Responder Course

  • Schedule: Tuesday/Thursday from 5:30-7:15 p.m.
  • Credits: 3 hours
  • This is a prep-course to become certified to be a Trip Leader with Venture Out.
    Successful completion of this course will include knowledge and demonstration of: Assessment and treatment of emergencies in remote settings. Anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, personal and group safety and hygiene, patient assessment and documentation of treatment for trauma, medical emergencies, environmental emergencies, and long-term care. Team management of medical emergencies in wilderness context, organization and implementation of rescues, decision-making, leadership, judgment, and prevention. Prepares students to successfully complete a national certification exam, provided at course completion. This course is pass/fail only.

HNFE 1214: Lifetime Activities in Swimming

  • Schedule: Tuesday/Thursday from 9:30-10:45 a.m.
  • Credits: 1 credit hour
  • Course prerequisites: In order to participate in this course, you must be able to swim 50 yards independently. This class will not be teaching you to swim. We will be improving stroke technique and getting a swim workout in.
  • Description: Participation in physical activity, fitness assessment, and motor skill development. Awareness and development of the physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and intellectual components of wellness. Application of healthy lifestyle choices for improved quality of life. Pass/Fail only.

HNFE 1214: Weight Training

  • Schedule:
    • Tuesday/Thursday from 8-9:15 a.m.
    • Tuesday/Thursday from 9:30-10:45 a.m.
  • Credits: 1 credit hour
  • Description: Participation in physical activity, fitness assessment, motor skill development. Awareness and development of the physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and intellectual components of wellness. Application of healthy lifestyle choices for improved quality of life. May be repeated with varying content, for a maximum of six credits. Pass/Fail only.

HNFE 2264: Exercise Leadership for Personal Trainers

  • Schedule:Tuesday/Thursday from 9:30-10:45 a.m.
  • Credits: 3 hours
  • Description: This is a prep-course to become certified to be a Personal Trainer.
    Review of the physiological and behavioral concepts and practical skills required to be an effective personal trainer for the general population as well as special audiences. Training and certification for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Fibrillation Certification- CPR and AED is provided. Prepares students to successfully complete the American Council on Exercise Personal Trainer National Certification Exam. This course is pass/fail only. This course is only offered in the spring semester.

Yoga Teacher Training Course

  • Location: McComas Hall Studio B from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on select Sundays
  • Class Details: Hybrid format.
    • In person workshops will take place on Sundays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Rates:
    • Fall & Spring Full 200 Hour Certification: $1200
    • Fall Only - 100 Hour: $700
  • Description: Learn to teach yoga! This Yoga Alliance-approved 200-hour teacher training program provides a broad and thorough education for aspiring yoga teachers and prepares participants to teach well rounded classes to students of all levels.
    By the end of this course, you will be able to sequence and teach a yoga class, offer modifications for students of varying levels and needs, explain how yoga can help support physical and mental well-being, understand the impact of yoga on the nervous system, discuss the history and evolution of yoga over time, and develop a working vocabulary of anatomical terms.
    Training hours will be spent practicing yoga, in lecture and group conversation, in small group activity, and practicing teaching with feedback from your trainer and your peers. Expect some homework throughout the program, plus content submitted via video on weeks we do not meet in person. Students can anticipate full, engaging days learning to teach yoga in a dynamic group environment! A portion of the 200-hours will be video content, readings, self-study and practice teaching sessions. Course will be offered in the fall and spring semesters.

HNFE 1214: Golf

  • Schedule: Tuesday/Thursday from 9:30-10:45 a.m.
  • Credits: 1 credit hour
  • Description: This course is intended for beginners with little to no golf experience at all. This course will allow you to learn everything you need to know about the game of golf and gain confidence and start to feel comfortable playing out on the course. This course will go over putting, chipping, driving, rules of the game, nutrition, and some general maintenance. The first weeks of the course will be heavy on instruction with the last few weeks focused on being out on the course and playing.

HNFE 1214: Basketball

  • Schedule: Monday/Wednesday from 9:05-9:55 a.m.
  • Credits: 1 credit hour
  • Description: Participation in physical activity, fitness assessment, and motor skill development. Awareness and development of the physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and intellectual components of wellness. Application of healthy lifestyle choices for improved quality of life. Pass/Fail only.
  • Topics Description: This course provides the opportunity to participate in aerobic exercise and other stimulating exercises providing for optimum fitness. This basketball class is for students who may or may not have any prior experience with the sport of basketball. This course works on basketball fundamentals, building endurance, teamwork, leadership, and improving technique.

HNFE 1214: Caving

  • Schedule: Thursday/Thursday from 12:30-1:45 p.m.
  • Credits: 1 credit hour
  • Topics: Types of caves, formation of caves, speleothems, cave wildlife and bats, risk management, trip planning, basic rope systems/SKED, Leave No Trace/ethics, etc.
  • Please note: Students will be required to attend two caving trips during the semester.
