Swim Instructor

Position Description

The swim instructor position is an entry-level role providing safe and effective swimming lessons to participants within the aquatic programs. The swim instructor works under the direct supervision of the Aquatics professional staff, Aquatics Graduate Assistant, and the Swim instructor supervisor.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing lesson plans, presenting role model behavior, prevention of accidents and injuries, as well as following emergency action plans when needed.  In addition, swim instructors will provide individual feedback to participants and/or guardians regularly.

Must have the ability to adopt pro-active strategies to help advance the department's safety and risk management initiatives in order to create a positive and safe environment. In addition, Rec Sports consistently strives to create inclusive and welcoming environments, and to promote the importance of well-being and physical activity to all patrons.

Staff are encouraged to work multiple years within Aquatics to best take advantage of the significant development opportunities available. Depending on desire, they may advance to Swim lesson supervisor.

 Preferred Qualifications*

  • Must hold or be able to obtain a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification within three months of hire
  • Must be able to demonstrate the following skills/abilities

    - 50 yard freestyle

    - 50 yard backstroke

    - 25 yard breaststroke

    - 15 yards butterfly

*Qualifications are preferred but not required. Applicants are encouraged to apply and learn more regardless of qualifications.

Pay Rates

Working Rate - $13

Training Rate - $12

Hiring Timeline

We hire staff twice per year (April and December commonly) and operate year-round.
