Recreational Sports announces COVID-19 impacts on facilities and programs

Latest information from Virginia Tech Rec Sports

Update: June 22, 2020

McComas Hall’s recreation space will reopen to summer on-campus student residents and employees with an active rec membership on June 22 to pilot procedural modifications and safety measures.

Operational hours will be Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. To comply with Virginia’s phase two guidelines, modifications include navigational flow, spacing of equipment and participants, self-scanners, enhanced sanitization strategies, and more.

At this time, no new memberships will be sold and students not living on campus in the summer months will not be eligible. Rec Sports is working toward a safe reopening to all participant groups for the fall and appreciates your patience as they plan, practice, and train diligently with their staff.

Those that wish to receive direct communication for status updates should complete this form.

Update: March 18, 2020 - 8:45 a.m.

McComas Gym Closure Effective March 17

Given the unprecedented circumstances surrounding COVID-19, McComas Gym and War Memorial Gym will close effective immediately. These are preventative measures that both Governor Ralph Northam and Virginia Tech are taking to prevent additional spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and to minimize health and safety risks to our students, staff and the Blacksburg community.

Staying fit and active is a great way to build a strong immune system and stay healthy. While our facilities are closed, we will continue to provide healthy exercise alternatives that encourage safe social distance. These opportunities include:

  • Les Mills On Demand: 95 free digital home exercise classes across eight categories

  • Hokie Fit: Rec Sports online training program, which includes a free 2-week kickstart plan and exercise tutorial videos

We will continue to monitor the situation and review recommendations from public health officials.

All questions are encouraged to be submitted to the Rec Sports business office by email ( or phone at 540-231-6856.
